I am tired, I am so tired that I want to collapse on the couch and sleep for a month. I am not the only one who feels this way, I am not the first and I will not be the last. I am physically, emotionally and mentally exhausted but I will carry on….and on….and on. You have listened to me preach about exercise and nutrition in business related terms for months now and I feel we have formed a special bond. It’s time for you to know a little more about me to give you some perspective about my life and maybe you will find some tidbits to help you.

Work Smarter, Not Harder
I’m sure you have all heard of the age-old adage ‘Work Smarter, Not Harder’. The idea being that through prioritising, planning, focusing and learning when to say no, you can work more effectively. This would give more time for external activities (such as exercise), family and fun. In turn decreasing your stress levels and minimising the risk of burn-out. While I can’t tell you what to do on the business front in order to take these steps, I can give you some pointers on how this motto can be applied to your health by ‘smartening’ up your eating and exercise regime.
People, The Heart Of Your Business
From humble beginnings back in the 50’s Swisse Vitamins has grown exponentially to dominate the Australian vitamin market. Swisse is an independent Australian company who pride themselves on producing scientifically validated products through vigorous research and clinical studies.
The 80/20 Rule In Health
It would be hypocritical of me to sit here and preach to you
about being healthy all of the time, particularly over the ‘Silly Season’. It
would also be hypocritical of me to tell you to detoxify after New Years,
although it is a good idea to get rid of all those nasty toxins accumulated
recently. It would be extremely optimistic of me to ask you to make New Years
resolutions about your health and actually expect you to keep them. So instead
I urge you to consider the 80-20 rule. Yes I know you’ve heard of it in
relation to business how 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. So 80%
of your profits come from 20% of the time you spend and 80% of your profits
come from 20% of your clients. In
turn 80% of your hard working hours are generating only 20% of your profits.
Why do we spend so much time to make so little extra? And why is a personal
trainer rabbiting on about the 80-20 rule when he is supposed to be talking
about health and fitness? Well the 80-20 rule can be applied to health and
life as well. Life is basically 80% work and 20% play. We work all day, take
work home, think about it at night and even work on the weekends. Doesn’t sound
like much fun eh?! I think life should be 80% fun and 20% work…unfortunately unless
you are a clown then this is probably wishful thinking.
Healthy Employees, Healthy Business
I'm sure you have heard the old phrase: ‘Those
who play together stay together’. This is as true in the workplace as it is at
home. The happier, healthier and more content your employees, the more positive
the work environment. Makes sense right? Have you ever sat down and actually
thought about this? Have you ever considered the health and happiness of your
employees beyond assessing sick entitlements? Have you ever put yourself in a
position to really get to know their working environment? If not, then why? We
work about 33% of our lives so we really should enjoy being there. The happiest
working environment is one where everyone gets along.
Health in Business Terms
Money matters. The heart of every business is money. It’s all about profit and loss – healthy profit means healthy business and losses lead to business failure. Thanks for stating the obvious, right?? Now think about your health in these terms. Think of exercise as profit and poor nutritional choices as loss. For example a 1-hour high intensity workout will gain you about 500-600 calories (or dollars). Now you can choose to ‘bank’ these calories and eat healthy for the day therefore leading to a healthy body, or you could ‘spend’ these calories on poor food choices.
Jetting To Business And Fitness Success
You are the owner of Jetts Fitness. Can you give our readers a little bit of background on yourself and the business?
I started in the fitness industry in 2002 as personal trainer, working from a local gym before setting up a personal training studio. After 18 months in the studio the fire was burning to do something bigger, so I raised some debt and purchased the old gym in the area I grew up in. Together with my now wife Cristy, we built the club up before selling it in 2006 to develop the Jetts business plan. In 2007 we relocated from the Sunshine Coast to the Gold Coast to open the very first Jetts club, in the suburban town of Helensvale. The club was a hit, selling out of memberships in 6 months – we knew at that point we were onto something big.
Turn your inner desires into reality!
Take a moment to look in the mirror....no, REALLY look in the mirror. Turn around, check yourself out and answer me honestly, are you happy with what you see? If you answered ‘yes’ then fantastic, well done!! You are however in the minority. Most people nowadays are unhappy with what stares back at them from that bothersome piece of glass. You may not believe me but we all have the power to change this and turn a ‘no’ into a great big ‘YES!!’. How? Well it starts with finding what motivates you. I enjoy the feeling of a great workout, the burn in my muscles and the sense of achievement at the end, this is intrinsic motivation. My wife is more extrinsically motivated, she loves the reward of feeling like she has earned her ‘treats’. The key to continued training is to find your motivation buttons and press them! So what are they? Well here are a few ideas:
The Benefits of Stretching
I might be showing my age, but as a kid playing sport,
stretching usually consisted of 2-3 minutes of rocking your head from side to
side, quickly trying to touch your toes, then attempting to balance on one leg
while you pulled your foot up behind your backside. Stretching was always…
